Ronald McDonald House Charities announced the completion of project Guest Room Renovation at their East Portland House. This year-long renovation updated four rooms, improving the experience for their guests. Not a moment too soon, four new families moved into the renovated rooms that evening. By staying at the Ronald McDonald House, parents are able to remain close by their hospitalized child at little or no cost and have access to numerous support services, including home-cooked meals.

Ronald McDonald House East renovation complete; first families move in by day’s end

Portland, OR — Ronald McDonald Charities® of Oregon and Southwest Washington today announced the completed renovation of the final four rooms in the charity’s East House. The year-long project represents a generous donation of time, materials, and expertise from leading Oregon companies that support the organization, which provides a free, comfortable “home away from home” for families with seriously ill children.
The project was led by Walsh Construction of Portland; project partners included Parr Lumber, Faustrollean Fixture Company, Mr. Rooter®, Tempur-Pedic®, Devine Color Floor, Devine Bath, Christenson Electric, Ashley Furniture, Rexel Lighting, H.L. Stearns Lighting, DecorView, and Cassie Fisher Murals.
Highlights of the renovation include:
- New flooring for a clean, soundproof surface with the color and feel of home
- Dimmable LED lighting for personalized control throughout the room
- New furniture with improved clothing storage, lamps, desk workspace, and comfortable seating options for adults and children
- New window treatments for light control and privacy options
- New bathroom vanities and countertops for a clean, fresh look
- New faucets and showerheads
- New mattresses for a comfortable night’s sleep
- New framed art and floor-to-ceiling murals in each room
Operations manager Andy Olds said the project reflects solid alignment with Ronald McDonald House Charities’ mission. “Our valuable partners helped us renovate and update the four rooms with a focus on improving the experience of our guests,” Olds said. “Everything we do here is for our families.”
Last year, the three Oregon and Southwest Washington Ronald McDonald Houses served 1,250 families for 18,113 nights; the East House served 1,060 families for 7,896 nights. The East House is a bustling place where, within hours of the project’s completion, its true purpose came full circle: Four new families moved to four beautifully refurbished rooms.
