Ever wonder what’s behind a wall before you start knocking it down? What is blocking? Blocking are small pieces of material, usually lumber, installed between larger building components, such as floor joists, ceiling rafters and wall studs. And even though blocking is small, it’s a huge component of any construction project, whether it’s a whole home new build, or a bathroom remodel.
Blocking generally serves two main purposes and at the same time, provides many roles. It makes a house more stable and structurally sturdy and secures backing for other materials to fasten onto. Blocking in floor joists adds weight bearing support and prevents joists from twisting. It’s easier to install drywall, wainscotting, and siding. It’s a must for any upper cabinetry to stay in place and if you want the bath bar not to fall off the wall and the staircase railing to stay put, blocking is a no brainer.
