A child from a low-income family enters first grade with an average of only 25 hours of one-to-one picture book reading. Compare this with 1,000 to 1,700 hours for a child from a typical middle-class home. That’s why from now until August 30th, Parr Lumber is collecting used and new books at our Portland metro area stores (see list below). The books will be given to the Children’s Book Bank. The donated books will then be distributed to children whom normally cannot afford books.
Parr Lumber is a proud sponsor of the NW Natural Parade of Homes, which starts next week. The event will run from July 11th to July 27th. Hours are 10am to 8pm Wednesday through Sunday (closed Monday’s and Tuesday’s). Regular price admission is $12, but you can get a discount with our $2 off coupon. Children 12 and under are free.
We have a fun project today for those of you who love to work with potted plants. Amber, our manager in Albany, is going to explain how to build a garden work bench using fencing boards. This is an easy-to-do project that only takes about 20 minutes. The tools you will need are: drill, tape measure, saw (circular or miter), square and brush. Below are the list of materials and cut list:
Father’s Day is less than two weeks away. To help celebrate Father’s Day, we are giving away two $50 gift cards to a restaurant of the winners’ choice. To enter, go to our Facebook page for Parr Lumber and/or Parr Cabinet. One winner will be randomly selected for each Facebook page. You can enter both sweepstakes. The deadline to enter is June 15th (Father’s Day).
The summer is nearly here and it’s time to refinish the deck to have it ready for the upcoming evenings of outdoor entertaining. The key for your wood deck is to do the correct preparation before you start. If you have an older wood deck, it probably looks pretty dull and grey. To get it back to its correct color, you will need to clean and brighten it first. If you put the new stain on an old, unclean board it will look splotchy and uneven. The good news is that you can clean and brighten your deck in just one day.
Spring is the time for building. People are getting to work on new decks, fences and raised beds. But before you start you should make sure you are getting the right wood for the job.
There is nothing like sitting in the garden during the summer and enjoying all the plants and wildlife around you. The problem is finding a nice and inexpensive bench to sit on when you are out in the garden. Have you ever consider building your own? Amber, the manager at our Albany yard, has a great idea that she decided to share with us. This one was pretty easy to build and it was cheap too. All you need are some cinder blocks, some 4×4’s, a little paint, some adhesive and some cushions.
